COLLEGIAN POLICIESThe Collegian publishes the following policies in the first issue of each new academic year.
FundingThe Collegian is funded by advertising, subscriptions and student fees administered by the college's Student Federation.
MembershipsThe Collegian is a member of the Michigan Collegiate Press Association and the Associated Collegiate Press.
Editorial boardStudent editors (editor in chief, news editors, opinions editor, arts editor, focus editor, features editor, sports editor and web editor) comprise The Collegian's editorial board, which makes decisions on content, coverage, scope and treatment of news, features, sports and opinion articles as they interest and concern Hillsdale College. The editorial board also generates the staff editorial (or "the Weekly"). The views in the Weekly, which is written by the editor in chief or the opinions editor, reflect the views of the majority (vote) of the newspaper staff. The faculty adviser sits on this board as a nonvoting member.
Conflicts of interestStaff members of The Collegian must declare conflicts and avoid involvement in stories about persons with whom they have financial, adversarial or close relationships. Staff members may not cover a campus organization to which they belong or in which they participate.
IdentificationWhen working on a story, staff members of The Collegian will always identify themselves as a reporter and/or photographer.
Bylines/attributionAll stories, with the exception of the Weekly, will contain the name of the reporter in the byline. All photographs, with the exception of mug shots, will contain photo credits.
Anonymous sourcesThe Collegian does not use anonymous sources except under special circumstances, which will be determined by the faculty adviser.
CorrectionsThe Collegian is committed to accuracy, but should a factual error appear in print, a correction may be made for the readers' clarification in the next issue. Minor spelling errors will not be considered worthy of correction unless clarification is needed.
Letters to the editorThe Collegian's letters to the editor policy is stated in every issue. The opinions editor verifies the letter writer of all to-be-published letters. Letters should be less than 300 words. The Collegian has the right to edit for grammar, style and brevity.
Guest editorialsThe Collegian accepts guest (nonstaff) editorials from any reader with an opinion to express. Guest columns must be given to the opinions editor two weeks in advance of the publication date to be considered. The opinions editor determines the columns that run each week. All guest editorials will have a byline with the author's name and mugshot and clearly state that it is the opinion of the author. The opinions editor has the right to edit the editorial for grammar, style and brevity.
StyleThe Collegian uses The Collegian Stylebook and Associated Press Stylebook in preparation of copy, captions and headlines.
DistributionThe Collegian is published Thursdays during the academic year. The Collegian's publication schedule is posted on its Web site
