IM volleyball tournament a success

The first IM volleyball tournament ended with a bang Monday as the Sigma Chi fraternity's team beat out the team "Number 7" in a two-out-of-three series.

"It was relatively close," junior Tyler Sharette, a member of Number 7, said. "But they definitely beat us. We took care of our opponents through the first few matches, but once we reached the championship game, it seemed like the other team had more focus. Everything seemed to go their way."

The tournament, originally scheduled for Sunday, took place indoors Monday due to rain.

Senior Kurt Weil, the student intramural sports coordinator, said the tournament was a success.

"It went fairly well considering that we got rained out," he said.

Despite a few teams dropping out because of the necessary rescheduling that took place, the courts were still teeming with excited players, Weil said.

"There was a lot of sign-ups and a lot of interest," he said. "There was a pretty good turnout, and it was pretty even. Some teams had more girls and some had more guys, but it was even overall."

Sharette said he enjoyed the new tournament but wishes it could have been outdoors.

"It was really fun," he said. "It was unfortunate we couldn't play in the sand though."

Though the tournament was well received, Weil doubts whether volleyball garners a season of its own in the future.

"I don't know if we could make it a season," Weil said. "That's up in the air. I think people like the tournament style more - that way we can have one or two tournaments a year."

Weil said there will for sure be another tournament next year.
