Guitar students pluck wisdom from guest performer

Fingerstyle guitar innovator Alex de Grassi punctuated a busy Friday on campus with a guitar master class and a performance in Markel Auditorium for a capacity audience. (0) comments

People not familiar with jazz should be ready to stick to their seats for the Hillsdale College faculty sextet's third performance tomorrow at 8 p.m. in Markel Auditorium. The sextet will play a historical overview of jazz featuring, in the second half, music so wild it has prompted audience members to leave the room when played in other venues. (0) comments

An upcoming watercolor exhibit will mark the first time the art department has decided to install a donor's artwork in at least 30 years, department faculty said. The month-long Watercolors exhibit is scheduled to open Sunday in Daughtry Gallery and will feature about 30 paintings by Peggy Eskridge, a classically trained artist and former professor of watercolor painting in landscape architecture at Harvard University, Art Department Chairman Sam Knecht said. Due to the strike by the Writer's Guild of America (WGA), many hit television shows like "The Office" and "Grey's Anatomy" have been stuck in production limbo since last fall. Now that the supply of written shows has dried up, viewers have nothing to tune in for but endless reruns and hastily produced reality shows. (0) comments

The faculty and students here at Hillsdale may not be America's biggest fans of the dying union and guild system that old labor uses to barter with large corporate conglomerates, but they better pay attention as the Writer's Guild of America makes a last stand for the dying unions on the picket lines. Junior Maria Cantin and Senior Chris Stewart recently competed in the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival, held in Milwaukee, Wis. in late January. They traveled with about 10 other theater students from Hillsdale College. Going further into the competition than any previous Hillsdale student, Stewart made it into the semi-final round for the acting competition. (0) comments
