This week, the officers for the 2008 senior class requested $17,800 from Student Federation to co-fund this year's senior class gift, a small, multipurpose amphitheater behind Delp Hall, estimated to cost $60,000. "In recent history, this is the largest amount of money ever requested from student fed," said Federation Secretary Ben Nygaard, a junior. (0) comments

The City of Hillsdale buys 1,000 tons of salt every year from Michigan's purchasing contract to last the entire winter season. It's Feb. 21, and the 1,000 tons are gone. City of Hillsdale Director of Public Services Keith Richards said this winter's ice storms drained the city's salt supply. (0) comments

Professor of Philosophy James Stephens officially took medical leave this week, and will undergo at least eight weeks of treatment for the throat cancer he was diagnosed with earlier this month. "We hope he's able to get through this well, and hope the first eight weeks of treatment is sufficient," said Thomas Burke, chairman and professor of philosophy and religion. (2) comments

Hillsdale College students may soon have a place to store and shoot their firearms. About 72 acres of land, roughly three miles south of campus on Bankers Road will open as a shooting range this fall, Hillsdale College officials said this week. The range will open initially without frills, though building storage areas for firearms is part of the long-term vision for the range. (3) comments

Independence Grove construction delayed; depositor number nearing the 44 needed to break ground

Half a dozen Hillsdale College students joined a worldwide protest against the Church of Scientology Feb. 10, said a Hillsdale student who participated in the protest. College changes loan management software

Administration officials will soon use new software to manage incoming payments from Hillsdale College's 5,219 student loan accounts, Director of Financial Aid Rich Moeggenberg said last week. Beginning March 1, the college will replace the coupon books currently used for loan collections with monthly bills to be delivered by mail, Moeggenberg said. (0) comments

The Michigan Electronic Libraries Catalog (MeLCat) will be offline on Feb. 27 for Hillsdale College. The program will undergo a software upgrade. Hillsdale College debate took first place sweepstakes, topping their rivals Grove City College and Cedarville University at the prestigious Wheaton College Tournament last weekend, highlighting a successful trip to the Chicago area. Congressman visits

U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg, R-Mich., and his wife paid a visit to Hillsdale's campus Monday at the invitation of Hillsdale College Republicans. A few randomly selected women in Olds Residence awoke Feb. 9 to find a surprise waiting at their door - a U.S. Census Bureau survey. Although some of the students found it strange to see a federal government official in their residence at 10:30 in the morning, the census taker "seemed official," said freshman Katelyn Pay. Guest professor teaches class on American liberalism

Last week, James Piereson, senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research, visited Hillsdale College, taught a week-long political science class and delivered a public lecture Thursday night. The class and lecture addressed contemporary American liberalism. (0) comments
