Hillsdale airport runway extended to fit private jets, funded with federal money

This summer, the Hillsdale Municipal Airport took significant strides towards playing a more important role in the community. The airport runway is being lengthened from 4,000 to 5,000 feet and widened from 75 to 100 feet - enough space for private jets to access the airport. (0) comments

Core curriculum changes still up for discussion

Plan won't go to Board of Trustees until summer; logic and theology on table

Administrators are still considering changes to core curriculum requirements, but said a plan will probably not go before the Board of Trustees until next summer. In two meetings this summer, Associate Provost David Whalen, President Larry Arnn and Provost Bob Blackstock considered additional core requirement courses suggested by a faculty task force. Jones diagnosed with cancer, still teaching

39-year-old professor: "Living for me is working and playing music"

Professor of Music Eric Jones, 39, will continue to teach classes and drum lessons despite being diagnosed on April 25 with stage 4 glioblastoma, a type of brain cancer. "I think when you look at your own mortality, one thing you want to do is you want to live, you don't want to feel sorry for yourself," he said. (0) comments

Even amidst a faltering national economy, when compared to both public and private four-year institutions, Hillsdale College stands out from the crowd in terms of retention rates. The percentage of sophomores returning to Hillsdale after their freshmen year is more than 20 percent above the national averages. (0) comments

Student Federation assembled Thursday for the first meeting of the semester. The federation welcomed seven new representatives to this year's body of deliberation. "They were eager to jump right in and vocalize their opinions on the issues we considered today," President Brian Painter, a senior, said. (0) comments

"What kind of things do we use to make art?" asks sophomore Becky Schoon. The initially bashful kids - ages 8 and up - began excitedly listing off the usual art supplies such as pencils, crayons and pastels. The College Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams appear on-schedule for October, despite their cancellation last year because of technical difficulties. The exams normally offer only freshmen an opportunity to earn credit, but this year the registrar will also allow sophomores to test if they had tried to do so in 2008. (0) comments

The Hillsdale Forum is officially coming back to campus after a dormant period this past spring. The Forum, a campus opinion newspaper, found itself in the midst of financial and technical problems regarding its publication. "The publisher raised prices; it was a funding problem," said senior Emilia Huneke-Bergquist, editor of the Forum. (0) comments

Freshmen men and women fear and respect Teri Martin, house director of McIntyre Dorm. Renowned for her no-nonsense policies and matter-of-fact way of getting things done, Martin is known to her friends as a gentle and caring woman and a connoisseur of shoes. (1) comment

The class of 2009's gift to the college still hasn't arrived. The language lab is not yet operational because of problems with copyright laws, funding and software selection. In addition, students may have to pay language class fees of at least $24 to help pay for the lab, said language professors. (0) comments

The men's music honorary Mu Alpha will host an informal "jam session" on Oct. 2 in the tradition of continuing relationships with fellow music honorary Phi Mu Alpha. Last year, Mu Alpha invited men interested in music, including members of Phi Mu Alpha, over to play and listen to music. (0) comments

After a tense election last semester in which then junior Andrew Cureton stepped down from his position as Hillsdale College Republicans Chair to run for election to Student Federation president, the new chair and sophomore Jackie Beattey and her fellow Republicans have organized events on campus throughout the year and plan to participate in several events apart from the college.
