The Charger football team broke records, made history and moved one step closer to their goal of entering the playoffs at Saturday's homecoming game where they beat Ashland University 49-28.

"It feels good to be at this point," head coach Keith Otterbein said. "Our kids are playing hard and executing well. They have worked very hard to get to this point. They have raised their effort to get to their goal and are earning from the hard work they put in."

For the first time since 1992 the Chargers are 3-0 for the season and for the first time in 116 years of football history they have scored above 40 for three consecutive games.

"We are definitely going in the right direction," co-captain Tom Korte, a junior, said. "Everyone keeps saying they don't remember the last time we have been 3-0, so it feels good to be apart of that."

Co-captain and quarterback Mark Nicolet, a senior, went 29-for-42 creating a new school record of 426 yards, surpassing 421 yards set in 1999. Also adding to the history books, junior Aaron Waldie caught 11 passes tying the school record set in 1976.

"The motor that makes the train go right now is the guy pulling the trigger," Otterbein said of Nicolet who was named GLIAC offensive player of the week for the first time in his career.

Saturday the sun was shining and temperature cool, the student section and home side of the stands were packed tightly with fans. Confidence from being 2-0 gave players the drive to come out victorious again.

"A huge part of our success is our confidence is up," Nicolet said. "And the support of the school behind [us] and fan base was unbelievable."

The Pit Posse was an example throughout the game of the fan base behind the Chargers. With each score, the Posse ran into the end zone, ready to match push-ups to points.

"We'll take one for the team," said sophomore Stephen Ford, who was shirtless, painted and doing as many push-ups as the Chargers had points. "School spirit is what makes this place run."
