On most sunny afternoons, e-mails are sent to over 100 Frisbee enthusiasts encouraging them to meet on the intramural fields for their daily dose of ultimate Frisbee.

Junior Paul Mueller, a forerunner of the movement, said it usually draws a crowd of 20 or more students willing to take a study break for the glory of a touchdown. Occasionally, the group divides themselves to accommodate the large numbers.

All the interest generated has sparked serious ideas of becoming an official Frisbee club, although no action has been taken thus far.

"It's still in the feeling out phase," Mueller said. "There haven't been any proposals yet."

If they do become a club, Mueller said, the Frisbee players could set up an intramural season and host annual tournaments.

Senior Jason Custer said the first time he ever played was on the quad at Hillsdale. One of the great things about Frisbee here, he said, is that people with all different skill levels are able to partake.

Frisbee is a venue that allows students to meet and plug into a new side of Hillsdale life, Mueller said.

"The new quad will be great," Frisbee participant, senior Phillip Brenneise, said. "Because it is the centerpiece of the campus and people passing by will be able to jump in more easily."

The new quad will bring a different dynamic to the game. Playing in the middle of campus provides a social element the IM fields lack due to their distance from central campus.

"It's a 5 to 6 minute walk down there, so you have to play for at least an hour to make it worth while," Brenneise said.

Brenneise also said he likes the accessibility of being able to jump in and out of games depending on students' schedules. However, this will not stop them from using the IM fields for big games.

The Frisbee players plan to use the new quad in the spring, once Grewcock Student Union construction is completed.

"It will enable us to attract a lot of new people just seeing us out there every day," Mueller said.
