Ten contestants vied for the title of Hillsdale Idol on Tuesday night, singing to garner judges' attention and, more importantly, audience votes.

The Hillsdale Idol competition, sponsored by the Chi Omega sorority, offered cash prizes to winners to the musical performers who could collect the most votes from the audience: $100 for first place, $50 for second and $25 for third. The audience was guided by comments from the judges, who included the Dean of Men Aaron Peterson and professors Angie Pytel and Harold Siegel. The panel impersonated judges from the American Idol television program.

The winner was junior Betsy Stone, who all the judges agreed was a "talented singer."

"I'm so elated," said Stone, who wowed audiences with her a cappella version of "When I Fall in Love." "I absolutely did not expect to win," she said.

Seniors Fred Hadra and Cody Strecker took second, inciting audience laughter with their rendition of "A Whole New World." Melissa Gordon, a sophmore, took third place with Christina Aguilara's, "I'll Turn to You."

Freshman Kirsty Sadler gave an encore performance with her sidekick, a puppet named Lucy. The judges were true to their televised counterparts, with Pytel sweetly complimenting the performer's shoes and Siegel advising a performer to stick to karaoke in Coldwater.

Senior Elizabeth Erikson, who organized the event, said all the ticket sales would be donated directly to Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan. The event raised more thanb $380. Erikson said she hoped Hillsdale Idol could grow into a popular yearly event.
Freshman Mariam Poole said she had hoped for more serious musical acts, but enjoyed the show.

"I hoped the puppet would win," she said, "but all of the girls did a really great job."
